On Friday, August 2, 2019, Southeastern College Charleston hosted its annual commencement ceremony to honor the more than 300 students who earned their degrees during the 2018-19 school year. More than 200 graduates crossed the stage in a ceremony which culminated with the conferral of degrees by Campus President Timothy Van Horn.

A pair of South Carolina state representatives headlined the commencement ceremony. Representative Sylleste H. Davis (District 100) gave the keynote address. She was welcomed to the stage by Representative Linda Bennett (District 114). In her remarks, Davis shared with the graduates the importance of everyone having their own life story and congratulated them on completing this chapter of theirs.

“Everyone has a story, a unique set of experiences that has led them to this point,” said Davis. “The challenge is using that story to make a difference just as others have done and as you will do.”

The ceremony was held at the Lightsey Chapel on the campus of Charleston Southern University. A near-capacity audience of family, friends, and supporters was on hand to cheer on the graduates in their accomplishments.

More than half of the students participating in the ceremony earned medical assisting degrees; 94 graduates accepted their diplomas in medical assisting while 19 earned their Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting. Students also earned diplomas in electronic medical billing and coding, pharmacy technology, and massage therapy.

This year’s class of graduates featured many students who transferred to Southeastern Institute from the former Virginia College. Approximately 30 graduates began their academic careers at Virginia College before the school’s unfortunate closure in December 2018. Students who started at Southeastern due to the closure were awarded matching tuition and many found the transfer of credits to be seamless.

Pamela Maker was named the class of 2019’s valedictorian and earned her diploma in medical assisting. Tyiesha Brown, also a graduate of the medical assisting diploma program, was selected as the class’s salutatorian.

The evening culminated with unique and time-honored occasion in which students thank their friends and family who supported them. Students were invited to present a rose to someone who has made a difference in their lives and who helped the most during their time as a student at Southeastern Institute.
